Level:  Case Study

IT and analytic teams often struggle to access quality data in a timely and efficient manner, as data is often locked inside traditional data warehousing platforms. In this session, Chad Dau, Senior Director Real World Informatics & Analytics Services at Astellas Pharmaceutical will share his experience in migrating Astellas' analytic data from a data warehouse appliance to a hosted Hadoop data lake. Chad will be joined in this presentation by Paul Barth, Ph.D at Podium Data.

In production for the past year, the data lake gives a team of 60 marketing analysts and data scientists secure, self-serve access to an expanded data universe to over 50 terabytes of pharmaceutical, clinical, and real-world data. Analysts have secure, self-serve access to find and create analytical data sets, which are accessible through commercial BI and data mining products. Based on the success of the platform, this pharmaceutical company plans to replicate this capability globally. This discussion will explore:

  1. Enterprise Data Lake (EDL) deployment best practices and pitfalls
  2. EDL investment, cost savings and ROI consideration
  3. Enabling self-service data access and preparation for analysts with no Hadoop skills
  4. Business impact of an enterprise data lake, including accelerating data preparation, lowering data storage costs, and ensuring data security and quality

Chad leads a global and cross-functional team responsible for Real World Informatics (RWI) core infrastructure (data, systems and tools). He is also responsible for establishing and leading the company’s regionally-aligned group of internal RWI consultants working closely with key stakeholder groups in major regions to meet regional business needs and helping to maximize the value informatics and analytics can deliver to patients. Chad joined Astellas in 2009 to build APUS' Marketing Analytics function. Through his tenure in market research and marketing sciences, Chad has been a champion and successful change agent bringing advanced analytics and informatics to the forefront of Astellas US commercial business. As Director of Urology and Hospital marketing sciences, Chad managed a team responsible for market research, analytics and competitive intelligence across four therapeutic areas and nine brands. Chad began his career as consultant with NDC Health and served a variety of roles at Takeda Pharma in business and marketing analytics. Before joining Astellas, Chad was a director of consulting for Marketing Analytics' pharma practice. Chad received his Master of Business Administration in Decision Science, Analytical Finance and Marketing from the Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University and his Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the University of Chicago.
